Narcissistic abuse is one of the most heinous types of abuse. It creates an addiction within its victims.
He was perfect at first. He showered me with gifts and compliments, he “wined and dined” me and took me away on spectacular holidays. He was always the perfect gentleman. He quickly professed his undying love for me, followed by a heartfelt proposal of marriage. This is known as “love bombing.” During this phase, he was very passionate and romantic. He also mirrored my thoughts and ideals to show me how much we had in common, hence promoting a strong attachment. All this propagated the release of oxytocin in my brain.
Narcissists create an addiction in their victims due to the release of oxytocin, known as the “love hormone”, released during touching or sex. It is also the same hormone that enables the unbreakable bond between mother and child.
However, it was hard for him to keep up the fake persona for long, and he started to alternate between abuse and love bombing, known as “The Domestic Cycle of Abuse”. He slowly replaced his adoration with manipulative behaviours including coercive control and verbal abuse. But it was too late, as I was addicted to him, as the release of oxytocin continued, even after he abused me, hence feeding my addiction which he had created. I became a “drug addict”.
