On Monday 19 May 2025, Trump directly spoke with Putin over the phone on ending the Ukraine war. Before the call, Trump declared: “THE SUBJECTS OF THE CALL WILL BE, STOPPING THE ‘BLOODBATH’ THAT IS KILLING, ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN 5000 RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS A WEEK, AND TRADE”. Shortly after his call with Putin, Trump said a peace deal would be a "tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED”.
Since then, Europe has imposed extra sanctions on Russia but Trump has not, so far choosing a trade deal with Russia over sanctions, as he believes that sanctions would impede his goal of "maximising economic opportunities for Americans.” He repeated that he is the only one Putin will listen to, due to their mutual respect. He said Putin is also tired of the whole war (which Putin thought would be over in a few days), but wants to look good and, he, Trump, can make him look good to get a peace deal.
No doubt there’ll be a golf resort somewhere near St Petersburg, soon.
But the crux of the problem remains that Russia wants all the Ukrainian land it has occupied but is not entitled to, and Ukraine can’t get it back by military means.
Previously, on 16 May 2025, representatives from Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul. It was the first time the two countries held direct talks in three years. But the only agreement was a prisoner exchange, albeit the largest so far of 1000 prisoners each.
Russia repeated its demands to end the war (mainly for Ukraine to give up its Russian-occupied territory and never join NATO) at the second round of peace talks in Istanbul on 2 June 2025. But the talks lasted less than an hour and the only agreement was to exchange more prisoners of war. We shall see…..
